Motivation
High-pressure entrained flow gasification is an efficient technology for the conversion of low-quality carbonaceous feedstocks (such as biomass, plastic waste or tire waste) into high-quality synthesis gas, which can be used for the production of renewable liquid fuels and chemicals in a circular economy. The feedstocks are typically converted using oxygen and steam, while the mineral compounds deposit on the reactor refractory and form various slag phases. The molten slag flows down the refractory and is discharged through the reactor outlet. The slag deposition determines the heat extraction through the refractory. Therefore, we are developing numerical models for describing the steady and unsteady slag flow behaviour and, in particular, for predicting the thickness of the deposition based on pilot-scale process data.
